K-ETA Complete Guide
Everything you need to know about Korea's Electronic Travel Authorization — who needs it, how to apply, and the latest exemption list.
Last verified: March 10, 2026
✈️ Entry Requirements
⏱ 5 min read
✈️ What is K-ETA?
K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization) is an electronic pre-travel authorization system introduced by the Korean government. If you're a citizen of a visa-free country, you may need to apply for K-ETA before entering Korea — even for a short visit.
Think of it like the US ESTA, Australia's ETA, or Canada's eTA. You apply online, pay a small fee, and receive approval electronically linked to your passport.
⚡ Editor's Note — March 2026
The Korean government has extended the K-ETA exemption for 22 specific countries until December 31, 2026. This exemption has been renewed several times. Always check eta.go.kr before your trip as the list can change.
🗺️ Who is Currently EXEMPT? (2026)
The following nationalities do NOT need K-ETA until December 31, 2026:
🇩🇪 Germany
🇫🇷 France
🇬🇧 UK
🇮🇹 Italy
🇪🇸 Spain
🇳🇱 Netherlands
🇵🇹 Portugal
🇦🇹 Austria
🇧🇪 Belgium
🇸🇪 Sweden
🇳🇴 Norway
🇩🇰 Denmark
🇫🇮 Finland
🇨🇭 Switzerland
🇦🇺 Australia
🇳🇿 New Zealand
🇯🇵 Japan
🇸🇬 Singapore
⚠️ Still Need K-ETA
🇺🇸 USA · 🇨🇦 Canada · 🇲🇽 Mexico · 🇧🇷 Brazil · 🇰🇷 Most of Asia — K-ETA required. Check the full official list at eta.go.kr.
📋 How to Apply — Step by Step
1
Go to eta.go.kr (official only)
Only use the official Korean government site. Avoid third-party sites that charge extra fees for the same service.
2
Create an account & fill in details
Passport number, date of birth, nationality, travel details. Takes about 10 minutes.
3
Upload a passport photo
A clear smartphone photo of your face works fine. White or plain background preferred. Same requirements as a standard passport photo.
4
Pay $10 USD by credit card
Fee is non-refundable even if denied. Visa, Mastercard, and some local cards accepted.
5
Receive approval (usually instant)
Most approvals come within minutes. Allow up to 72 hours. You'll get an email — no need to print anything, it's linked to your passport electronically.
✅ Pro Tip
K-ETA is valid for 2 years and multiple entries. Apply once and use it for every Korea trip within that period. Best to apply at least 3 days before flying, just in case.

🛬 Airport & Arrival
⏱ 6 min read
🏢 Terminal 1 vs Terminal 2
Incheon has two terminals. They are connected by a free shuttle bus (18 minutes) but arriving at the wrong one causes serious stress. Check your ticket before landing.
Terminal
Key Airlines
Notes
Terminal 1 (T1)
Asiana Airlines, most international carriers, budget airlines (Jin Air, Jeju Air, T'way)
Older terminal, slightly more complex to navigate
Terminal 2 (T2)
Korean Air, Delta, Air France, KLM, Garuda Indonesia
Newer, more modern, easier to navigate
⚠️ Common Mistake
Departure terminals can differ from arrival terminals for connecting flights. Always check the terminal printed on your boarding pass, not just what you remember.

💳 What is T-money?
T-money is a rechargeable RFID card used across Korea for public transport and more. Like London's Oyster card or Tokyo's Suica — tap to board, tap to exit.
You can use it on all Seoul subways, city buses, intercity buses, most taxis, and even some convenience store purchases. It's the single most useful item you can have in Korea.
⚡ Editor's Note
I always buy mine at the GS25 inside Incheon Airport arrivals. Takes 30 seconds. The staff are used to tourists — just point at the card display and hold up how much you want to load.

Bank rates better than exchange counters. Look for the branch inside arrivals.
Hotel front desk
⭐⭐ Poor
Worst rates. Avoid unless absolutely necessary.
🏧 ATMs that Accept Foreign Cards
Not all Korean ATMs accept foreign Visa/Mastercard. Use these:
✓
7-Eleven ATMs
Most reliable for foreign cards. Available 24/7. Accepts Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, Cirrus, PLUS. Look for the "Global" label.
✓
Woori Bank / Hana Bank ATMs
Most branches have a dedicated "Global ATM" machine with English interface. Max withdrawal ₩1,000,000 per transaction.
✓
Post Office ATMs (우체국)
Post Office ATMs are government-run and reliably accept foreign cards. Less convenient but very reliable.
⚠️ Avoid These
Regular Korean bank ATMs (Shinhan, KB Kookmin) often do NOT accept foreign cards. Try a 7-Eleven ATM first if you have trouble.
💳 Card Payments in Korea (2026)
Korea is extremely card-friendly. Visa and Mastercard are accepted almost everywhere. Apple Pay and Samsung Pay work at most modern terminals.

TAX REFUND · UPDATED MARCH 2026
VAT Tax Refund Complete Guide
Get 10% VAT back on your Korean purchases. Two methods: instant cash refund at the store, or airport refund. Here's exactly how both work.
Last verified: March 2026
🧾 Tax Refund
⏱ 5 min read
🧾 What is the Korean VAT Refund?
Korea's Value Added Tax (VAT) is 10%. As a tourist, you can get this refunded on eligible purchases — both at the store instantly, or at the airport when you leave.
⚡ Quick Summary
Spend ₩30,000+ at a single store with a "Tax Free" sticker → show your passport → get cash back or a refund voucher. Simple.
📋 Basic Requirements
Requirement
Details
Minimum purchase
₩30,000 per store (a single receipt)
Eligible items
Most goods — clothing, electronics, cosmetics, souvenirs
Not eligible
Food, alcohol, services, accommodation
What to bring
Your passport (always have it while shopping)
Store requirement
Must display "Tax Free" or "Global Blue" sticker
Time limit
Items must leave Korea within 3 months of purchase
💵 Method 1: Instant Cash Refund (Best)
1
Look for stores with "Tax Free" stickers
Most major stores in Myeongdong, Dongdaemun, Lotte Mall, and tourist areas participate. Olive Young, major cosmetics stores, department stores.
2
Tell the cashier "Tax refund, please" + show passport
They'll process it on the spot. You receive cash back immediately — usually ₩3,000–9,000 per ₩30,000–100,000 spent.
3
Done — money in hand
No paperwork to keep, no airport hassle. This is by far the easiest method.
✅ Best Method
Instant refund is available at most major shopping areas. It's faster, simpler, and you leave the store with cash. Use this whenever possible.
✈️ Method 2: Airport Refund
If the store gave you a refund voucher instead of instant cash, you redeem it at Incheon Airport before departure.
1
Keep all receipts and tax refund vouchers
The store will give you a stamped Tax Refund form. Keep it with your shopping receipt — don't pack it in checked luggage.
2
At Incheon: go to Customs BEFORE check-in
Show your purchased items + vouchers + passport at Customs. They'll stamp your vouchers. This step is optional for purchases under ₩750,000.
3
Go to Global Blue / Planet booths (after security)
Located in the departure area after passport control. Collect your refund in cash or back to your credit card.
⚠️ Allow Extra Time
Airport refund queues can be long, especially during peak travel. Arrive at the airport at least 30 minutes earlier than usual if you have vouchers to redeem.

Early spring is now my favourite time for Seoul. Fewer tourists than peak cherry blossom season but already warm enough. Gyeongbokgung raised entry to ₩3,000 in 2026 — still completely worth it.
